There is no evidence that the quarry was ever worked for lead or fluorspar, most likely because the overall grade of the ore deposit is low. When encountered, the mineralization was simply considered an impurity in the limestone and discarded in a series of now overgrown tailings piles on the south side of the quarry. Early workings at the Rogerley by Cumbria Mining and

Broadwood quarry, Frosterley, Weardale. In the 1980s and 1990s fluorspar mined at Cambokeels and Frazer’s Hush mines was taken to Broadwood quarry for processing. At the same time the quarry was worked on a small scale for limestone, operations for which exposed a mineralised vein crossing one end of the quarry.

The quarry has been recently worked as an open cast operation for the extraction of Fluorspar. As on my previous visit to Blakemere Pit, I parked in upper Winster and cycled the 3 miles or so to the quarry. Bonsall lane is a narrow lane with not much opportunity for safe parking. There is space to park at the opening of Blakelow lane but, as I mentioned in my Blakemere Pit entry,

08/02/2018 The Hastie Mining operation is primarily a limestone quarry with some deposits of fluorspar which run like veins through the rock. The company imports around 100,000 tpy of fluorspar, while locally-produced material costs around 20% higher than imports, according to Don Hastie, partner at Hastie Mining. But Hastie Mining has been developing a deposit in
Fluorspar is the main vein mineral sought in the Peak District and this is used in the chemical industry in processes related to: refrigeration, foam blowing, air conditioning, non-stick coatings, aerosols, anaesthetics and for etching crystal glass. Fluorspar is also used to a lesser extent in steel and aluminium making.
11/12/2020 Fluorspar (also called fluorite) is the mineral form of calcium fluoride, CaF2. An important industrial mineral, it’s considered a critical mineral by the European Union and the United States. It is an essential raw material to the steel, aluminum, and chemical industries in two marketable products: acid-spar grade and met-spar grade.
